Happy New Year! We are gearing up for another great year! Thanks to all who have supported us & continue to do so! We have lots of new goodies on the shelves and can't wait to see you!

Other news.... John has been able to sign on with us full time! He actually started on October 1st, but we didn't want "sympathy" buys so we didn't make it completely public! So we are officially a Full On Family Owned Business from start to finish. Even Big Bob (John's Dad) has come out of retirement to help out at the shop.

The decision to leave a "secure" job for John was not an easy one. But the quality of life for our kids, our marriage & overall health of our family unit was begging for Big Daddy! John has been an incredible asset to the business throughout the years with his Chemistry skills, overall knowledge of each product & belief in our success. It only makes sense that he is here full time.

There aren't many couples that can work together all day and still like each other, but apparently we got it! We feel really blessed to have this. We work better as a cohesive unit and know that this is the right decision for our kids and family life. Paying the bills is overrated right? Ba ha ha ha ha!

So in a day and age, where sometimes hope and encouragement seem to be lacking at times, know that there are still families working together and trying to make a good, hard go at it!

Is it scary? Yep.

Is it worth it? Yep.

Are we going to give up because its hard? Nope!

So go on and get dirty and know that when you need a gift, a good ole fashion bar of soap or just someone to chat with... we are here in little ole Hazelwood. (HazelHood to be exact!)

As we continue forward with our 5th retail year, its hard not to think back on all of the many days at the good ole Soap Co.! When we remininsce over all of the memories and efforts throughout the years, it always comes down to feeling an enormous amount of thankfulness!

This week my sweet Teague was down & out. He just felt like poop! Unfortunately, the bills & life do not go away when one of my little ones gets sick. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to have my rugrats by my side and even luckier to give them all the TLC they need while mixing and pouring away. We live in a town that not only respects our way of doing things, but actually cheers us on. My Teagan has grown up in this little soap shop. He has learned how to crawl, walk and now take orders from customers! :) He has been the taste tester (yikes), the label guy, the sweeper and my right hand man Monday-Friday at the soap shop. He IS, along with our other 3 children, what our shop is all about!

When we started out on this venture, we did not know what to expect. What we have gotten in return these past 5 years is a whole lot of support, love, loyalty & community. We certainly have had our fair share of stories to tell, but not without laughing! So we may not be millionaires, but we work hard, love our kids like crazy and appreciate what a community does and is for our family.

I will always cherish this picture (above) because it will keep me grounded on days where things feel overwhelming. On a tough week when my main man was down & out, I was still able to give him a big ole hug and say "its gonna be alright" because I had him right there in my lap.

Thanks to all of you that allow our family to just be a hard working family! Thanks for always getting really dirty and letting us supply you with some goods to get you all cleaned up! It is not about the money you accumulate, but about the relationships, experiences & wealth of love and support you find in others. We are wealthy beyond belief!

Are those individually wrapped soaps featured above? Yep! They sure are. As if I don't have anything else to do other than wrap each soap tediously by hand. But, these little treasures have kept me from going insane! With Spring just around the corner, we were hit yet again with the dirty 4 letter word yesterday...SNOW! Yikes! I lost it. I lost it big time. But this morning is a new day with sunshine and now beautifully wrapped Shea Butter Soaps! These beauties are just the thing to get you in the mood for Spring! They are bright, cheery, smell good & look wonderful just sitting there.

So, for now...I will continue to wrap each soap until Spring begins! If you know of anyone who suffers miserably from the last dribbles of Winter...why not pop into the shop and pick up one of these soaps. It is sure to put them in a better mood!

I have decided to do an entire blog post on why I have chosen this one item to carry in our shop. For obvious reasons, its a sassy tote that gets the message across LOUD & CLEAR! On another note, not until you actually pick up the tote and look inside in the tag do you realize how significant this one tote can be in your life.
These totes are going to retail in our shop for $18. WHAT! $18 for a tote bag? In the day in age where you can get a recyclable tote just about everywhere from grocery stores to gas stations, why on God's Good Green Earth would we carry such an expensive tote bag? (and I will tell you I am not even going to be making a good profit off of these at all, well not a financial profit that is).
It all starts with a "practice what you preach" moment I had. It is January and I am searching for new products to sass up the shop and get folks excited. I come across this one company, I'm Organic and I am intrigued. I go further and start snooping around. What I find is a company that has an honest mission statement to make a difference. They are a small business trying to do the right thing. Their bags are made in the US, 100% certified organic and SWEATSHOP free! So as I am making the decision to buy these, I consciously decide that YES, we will join the movement to try and make a difference and practice what we preach. I am supporting a USA made product that has put thought, concern and most of all hard work into a product. Will I have these totes still on my shelves come December? Who knows. One thing I do know is that Small Family Owned Business are STILL ALIVE and we depend on your support! So buy local, buy USA made and do your part to keep local businesses alive! Now, go get dirty!

We Continue To Prepare For SPRING!!!

Only 7 more weeks until Spring! ONLY! Whew...we are ready now! I get it, I get it...we are supposed to be patient. Well, nothing teaches me patience more than my good ole fashion Shea Butter Soap Recipe. These bars take 6-8 weeks to cure. We are just about there.

I have decided to spend most of my time when I have been able to get into the shop, making lots and lots of bar soap. It makes me so happy everytime one of these babies are sold! They are made with so much love that it just gives me treat feelings everytime someone expresses how much they love them. I will save my comments for those who think otherwise. :)

I also love having tons of bar soap in stock because it reminds me of our humble beginnings. "One bar at a time" was my motto most days and that is exactly what we have done to build our business. One bar at a time!

In order to try and get out of the "Winter Funk", I have been focusing on SPRING SCENTS!!!! Pictured above is our Zucchini Flower & Honey bar soap. Cherry Blossom, Basil & Herb Gardeners Soap, Earth Blend and a couple of others will be out on the shelves in just 2 weeks. We are NOT waiting 7 weeks until Spring over here! A New Creation Has Been Born!

Inspiration has arrived! And with this inspiration we give you...Nitty Gritty Body Scrub! That's right, its time to get to the "Nitty Gritty" of the situation! Whether you don't have time, have neglected special spots or just have never had an interest to exfoliate, may we suggest our new Nitty Gritty Scrub. Ah...there are so many good things happening with this one little jar of goodness. This Northerner is getting down to her Soulful Southern Roots! It will be a fierce competitor to the Infamous Sugar Scrub. But have no fear. If you choose to indulge in this exfoliating treasure, rest assure you will not be disloyal to your favorite Sugar Scrub. They are completely different in components, but so similiar in that they leave you a new person!

Included in this recipe is a list of goodies. Dead sea salts & grits to exfoliate, honey to soothe, milk to soften your skin & of course a healthy dose of whipped shea butter and luxurious oils. Getting Ready for 2011!

As the snow melts (please Dear God let the snow melt) we continue to find inspiration for 2011! We continue to blend, pour and label our staples that everyone loves and adores and then go a step further and create some new goodies.

With a shaky economy and harsh winter, we realize that it is very crucial to stick to wonderful products, but affordable products. We are gearing up to offer lots of new things via travel size.

If you have any words of wisdom for this lil ole soap gal, we would love to hear them. We have been very fortunate to have our company grow with the support of our Soap Fans! Keep the comments coming, the suggestions and more than anything please go and get dirty!

Get Us Out of This Snow!

Yike-a-rama! Snow, snow, snow. If only we had our sodium hydroxide up here to make a special "Fresh Snow" Soap then we would feel useful! We have over a foot of snow and not looking so good for the ole soap production. The shop feels a million miles away at the moment. But, we are getting very creative over here. We continue to plan & create from our "ice cave"! If you check out the website www.hazelwooodsoapcompany.com you will find that we have put a special up. Its the Get Us Out of the Snow Sale. We are offering our Summer Scents on special. Yep, we are going there. We need some kind of hope. Coconut Lemongrass seems to be it! But once we regain our composure, the sale will be over. So cash in now while we are still going stir crazy.

As always, we would love to hear your feedback. What is your favorite scent? Favorite product? And if I should be so bold as to ask "What can we improve on for 2011"? (I am actually really nervous about the last question...serious people pleaser here people! )

Introducing our new addition!

Introducing our new addition! This is our restoration cream that has been a hit since Thanksgiving 2010. It all started out with a busy day in the shop. I started to make a batch of our traditional lotion. I measured out all of the ingredients, added some love & turned the blender on. Soon after, the door opened with a customer and then another and then another. I would turn the blender off in between customers, however before I knew it it was 4:30 and this batch had been blending for the entire day. What was I left with you ask? A very dense, rich cream that only some cracked nasty spots could love! So it had already been blended to the point of no return so why not add some more organic shea butter. I continued to blend (why not...it had been going all day anyway)and then the scooping began. A thick, awesome creation was born! The first batch was given out to 50 lucky Black Friday Customers. I figured folks were going to just be happy with a freebie and that would be it. We would go back to our traditional products. No way, no how. They have been coming in since asking for the "Restoration" cream that has been working for their husbands, mothers, fathers, hands, fingers, elbows, cracked feet, etc. So here we go. Another addition to our family of products! It has now been uploaded to the website and ready to go!

Curing, Pouring & Boxing Up Some Soap for the Big Day!

We are preparing for the Big Day After Thanksgiving! We are currently mixing, pouring & labeling lots of goodies for the shelves. We have over 600 bars of soap curing! This is no small task for it takes at least 6 weeks for these bad boys to cure. But have no fear, the soap will be here! Early birds will cash in on some extra savings at 8am on Friday, however if you can't make it out that early, we will be open until 6pm and 5pm on Saturday. Check back on this blog to make sure you are up to date on the latest savings!

NYC Marathon 2010!

Wow. What a year we have had! We gave the shop a face lift, added some new products, tightened up some loose ends, partnered up with a couple of new ventures, went to the Emmy Awards and sponsored a runner in the NYC marathon.

I have got to say...this was one of the best things we sponsored all year. It all started over a sippy in a joint in NYC while working at the Emmy gig. George (pictured above) was talking about running the NYC Marathon and my ears perked up! A second consecutive visit to NYC and another sippy later, I agreed to get this fella geared up with some HSCo attire. It actually turned out to be a last minute thing, but our LOCAL folks in Asheville NC from On a Roll Screenprinting were able to get this shirt ordered, printed and sent out within 2 days. Can't beat the local support!

George finished in 3:18 and we were so proud to see this pic of him! On the back of the shirt it read "George is FAST & DIRTY"! What a trooper he was to represent HSCo!

Hopefully next year I will be running the NYC Marathon with a WaynesVegas crew!

Fresh Batch of Sugar Scrub

Just to keep you in the loop...these lil gems have been our #1 selling product this year. Best thing about these sugar scrubs is that they got their fame all by "word of mouth"! They truly are one of the best things in the shop. Its multi-tasking at its finest! Simply go into the shower, rinse, scrub & rinse again. Once you step out of the shower, pat dry and you will notice tiny beads of jojoba oil (say that 10 times fast) on your bod...simply rub in and wa-la...no moisturizer needed. Soft and elegant all day long! Great for feet as well! I recommend this product from neck down! A bit too oily for the face, but if you are so inclined...go for it!

We are Back from THE EMMYS!

Whew...we are back from the Emmys. Physically a bit tired, but emotionally charged! We felt honored to be among the many fine companies that were chosen for the 31st Annual News & Emmy Awards. We started at 6am loading all of the boxes to send over to Lincoln Center. And then we were off to assemble 700 bags. These are just a few pictured above. So we assembled until about 2:30 or so and then it was time to get ready for the Pre-Emmy Cocktail Party. It was there that were able to take it all in. What a fabulous opportunity this little ole soap company was presented! We did indeed get to see the Emmy Awards Ceremony and that too was a wonderful experience. After the show it was back to work where we handed out Emmy Bags to folks like Katie Couric, Jim Leherer & many fine documentary folks among the Newscasters we are all accustomed to seeing each night on the ole boob tube.

It was a long fun filled day with lots of laughs, new friends were made and lots of stories I like to say I will save for the nursing home!

And...break! We did it!!!! Over 2000 samples were stirred, poured & labeled to send off to the 31st News Emmy Awards! This lil gem pictured above is getting EMPLOYEE of the YEAR because she was able to crank out 700 sugar scrubs!

We had tons of love and support within the past 48 hours and I really can't believe how stress free the whole process was in the end! Really...we are totally a day ahead of schedule. But I am going to say, we could NOT have done any of this without the crew that showed up at the shop! Not enough words to say how THANKFUL we are for the tribe we have by our side. So excited to help out with the Pre-Emmy events on Monday. I leave for NYC on Friday and hope to have lots of stories to tell!

2800 Samples to the Emmys!

Whew...it is a bit past 8:30 (Can you tell we have been hangin with our Scottish Friends all day?). Miss Eva reported for "friend duty" at 9am or so and was a HUGE help! The rest of the Bishop Clan followed soon after and we were able to crank out 700 body washes and close to 700 Shea Butter Sugar Scrubs for the "Wee Emmys"! (LOL) We cranked the music, fed the kids a bucket of chicken and were soon met by Chris and Sherryl who were on "Lip Balm Patrol"! They got right to work and have cranked out over 600 lip balms in over 2 days. We are so thankful for the continued support, the drop ins who give us a good cheer & the high fives from everybody that love us! So many local business owners realize the amount of work that has to be done in order to arrive at the Emmys. Cody, from In Touch 254 & Craig from Highland Painters are among the local biz folks who realize you are only as good as your good ole fashion hard work. Just when we were getting so stinkin tired...they showed up with tons of energy and support. We will forever be grateful for everyones friendship and love. We are going to go put the kids to bed and call it a day. Started at 8am this morning and will go strong through tomorrow!

We are Going to the EMMYS!!!!

Dear Loyal Hazelwood Soap Co Fans,

We are so excited because we were contacted yesterday by the folks who are in charge of getting those sassy Swag Bags ready for the Emmy Awards. They have chosen OUR PRODUCTS (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) to be part of the 31st Annual News Emmys held on September 27 in NYC! So we will be getting 2800 samples ready to ship off this Tuesday to the Big Apple. These little puppies will be given out to 700 distinguished guests including Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, etc.

We promise to make you all proud! I mean REALLY proud. I will head off to NYC on Friday and help out with the bags, etc on Monday before the big event! Can you HEAR the crazy excitement in this lil ole soap shop!

We will be having a "Going to the EMMYS" Sale soon. This is going to cost us a bit to put out these samples, but this is where your continued support means the world to us. 30 Day Challenge!

So here we go. We are taking a 30 day Soap Challenge here at Hazelwood Soap Company. I get it. Some of you take a 30 day fitness challenge or a 30 day detox challenge or a 30 day sugar fast challenge, but we take a 30 day SOAP CHALLENGE! What in the wide world of sports is that? Well, we are challenging ourselves to make a new, fresh batch of soap for the next 30 (work days). Now this sounds a lot easier said than done! There are many things that happen throughout the day within these 4 walls, but we are going to do it. It will make us stronger, happier and CLEANER! LOL. Plus, we will be well stocked for all of those Spring Time Visitors. So keep watch as to what we come up with. Feel free to add some thoughts, suggestions and inspiration!!! Till then...

Yeah Dawg! I love making these natural goodies. This is how we started, with a good ole fashion bar of soap. But unlike your Granny's Soap, we are able to use luxurious oils (instead of kitchen fat scraps) and wonderful essential oils. The web has provided a vast amount of resources throughout the world. So even folks in WaynesVegas can get the best essential oils.

I am excited to put this new soap out. It is being named THE MOTHER LOAD! It has so many goodies in it that no other name does it justice. Included in this creation is an essential herbal blend, French Clay, Peppermint essential oil, Oats, Jojoba Meal, Apricot Meal & lots and lots of love. This should be ready in about 3 more weeks. This was an out of the ordinary day because he showed up for work in regular clothes instead of his PJs. Ahhhhhhhhhhh....Can you smell the Love?

Ahhh...can you smell the cinnamon & other warm spices in our Hazelwood Harvest Blend? Everytime I make a batch of our Infamous Natural Shea Butter Bar of Soap, it makes me happy! Its very pure, lots of love has been put into it & its the very first recipe I claimed as my own. Its hard to believe it has been 9 years now since I first made our first batch of soap! Whew...time flies by. Well, I thought I would share this gem with everyone and let you know that we will have lots of bar soap in stock just in time for Easter Basket fillers and Spring Time Fun! These puppies take 6-8 weeks to cure. I told you that there is a lot of love & patience involved, but well worth the wait!

Our Reed Diffusers have always been a hit with our customers for a couple of reasons. As with all of our products, we do not over do it with the scent. We also use a large amount of oil in our recipe so that your diffuser will have a long life! Many companies add a substantial amount of alcohol, hence the rapid evaporation. You do want some alcohol in there in order for the scent to permeate throughout the reeds, but you should not have it evaporate within a couple of weeks. Our large reed diffusers tend to last anywhere from 9-12 mos. depending on how humid your environment is. Please feel free to contact us with any and all questions. Our top sellers are the Warm Spice and Walk in the Woods. Both are inviting and not overwhelming. We also have a Seasonal Scent so stay tuned! We have recently changed our bottles to a larger and thicker glass bottle.

Mr. Teague Reporting for Work!

If you are new to our company, we are a family owned business. It has always been our goal to keep our 4 kids by our side. We just think that they are great people and love being around them. So, Mr. Teagan (age 3) has been at the shop since we opened. He learned to crawl, walk and now help unload shipments with us all while being at the shop with his mom or dad by his side. Has it been easy? Not always, but has it been worth it...Yep. We wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. The other 3 kids help out at the shop as well. They all get off of the bus in front of the shop, go to the back for a snack, work on homework and then do a couple of chores each. We truly have a family owned business from start to finish. It works out great...the kids even get the chance to have their friends pop in for a brief visit occasionally. We really couldn't ask for a better scenario. If you do get a chance to visit the shop, you will often find Teagan in his PJ's and slippers. This kid has absolutely no worries! :)

Sneak Peek at Our New Spring 2010 Scents! Shhh...

So we are now on our way to mixing, labeling and really producing our Spring 2010 scents. Many of you are the ones who have chosen these little bad boys without even knowing it! The BAMBOO made a special "Guest Appearance" at the end of 2009 and the feedback was amazing. It is a clean, crisp, earthy BUT definitely not overwhelming scent. Great Unisex scent as well. We have decided to carry this gem in Handwash, Bodywash, Lotion & Our Signature Shea Butter Sugar Scrub.

The Fresh is pretty great, in my opinion. I am the one who is making everything so for me to like a scent after making about 9million (not really, but a lot of them for sure) that says a lot. Very clean, citrus based scent that works well with others. Great scent for those BLAH days.

Now lets talk about lil Miss Lovely...our latest and greatest. Again, I love a scent when it arrives and I love it all the way to the shelf, but after a gazillion I am not so in love anymore. I absolutely love, love, love LOVELY. I immediately made all of my favorite products in this scent and took them home. I actually couldn't wait to use the lotion. That says a lot! Its kind of like if you made cookies all day, the last thing you want to do is pop one of those bad boys in your mouth. Well, after making lotion all day I feel like I am plenty lotioned up. All I am saying is Lovely is now my favorite. Stop in one day and let me know what you think. Till then...
